Teams tend to swing between two mistakes: treating AI as a novelty to be tried on the side, or trying to automate everything at once. A better approach is to sort your marketing work into three groups and treat each differently.
Automate: high volume, low judgement
Reporting, tagging, resizing, transcription, first drafts of routine copy, translation, data cleaning. Set it up, check it weekly, and stop spending human attention on it.
Assist: judgement with a lot of grunt work around it
Campaign planning, creative development, audience research, SEO content, sales enablement. AI produces options and summaries; people decide. This is where most of the value sits, and where good briefs and clear voice guidelines pay off most.
Keep human: trust, taste and accountability
Brand strategy, positioning, pricing, crisis communication, key customer relationships, and final sign-off on anything public. These are the moments where being wrong is expensive and where customers expect a person.
Budget and team
Fund the assist layer first, because it compounds. Give people time to learn the tools, agree what good looks like, and measure output and quality together. The aim is not fewer people; it is a team that spends its time on the work only people can do.
